Chase stayed quiet through her whole dialogue, but still watching her. She left, calling them even now. She didn't want to have to felt like she owed him anything, which was fine. He always felt the same as well, and always tried to pay off debts he felt he owed as soon as possible. The feeling of someone hanging that sort of thing over your head at any time, he hated the feeling. He looked at the door after she left, mulling over her words. Did he want to go with her? It's not like she would be expecting him to protect her, the only thing she probably wanted was a companion for her travels, its the only reason he could think of why she offered for him to follow her if he'd like.
He didn't know what he had left home to find, nor did he have any ties to this city, so leaving wouldn't be that big of a deal. This seemed like an adventure that he would rather not miss out on. Mai also seemed like a very interesting person, he would like to get to know her better at least a little. Meeting and making friends with new people was something he set to work on while away from home, as is was something that he had never been good at. "Well, let's go, Zala." he told his pet, standing up and grabbing his bag, walking swiftly to catch up with her. He spotted her just as he exited the building, heading over in the direction. He walked up beside her, continuing to walk with her casually like he had been there the whole time. "Don't get flattered or anything, I'm just along for the journey." he said with a small hint of a joke in his voice.

Mai smiled at him and was content to no longer comment as they walked down the streets and headed towards the northern part of the city. The city was larger enough that once she was out of the southern "red light" district she was considered free. Then again she wasn't afraid to use her power of blood bending should they chase her down and threaten to drag her back. Her mind was far off from that place however, it had been snagged by the nightmares and the hold was firm. That scream..it was peircing and made her shiver, but who did it belong to?
Shaking her head the young miss looked about the surroundings and knew she would need to find some sort of lodging into the city. Nights in hotels were not going to be the best idea, though these things called beds were absolutely fantastic. "What do you...do?" she asked simply, looking towards him. Her hood was left down and her her cloak was pulled back and away from her body. The summer sun had already started to make the sweat begin to soak them but the faint breeze was enough to keep it from being unbareable. Mai was curious as to what this guy did for work, or if he did work? |I would like to get some kind of job...but the only thing I know is music...dancing...I mean I sing and play a flute and dance but..."she didn't want to go back to working on a street corner. but what else she was qualitfied for?
A sigh passed by her lips as they travelled through the streets. but as they came around a bend the couple passed a small dress making shop, an elderly woman was sitting out front working on some beading and Mai smiled sweetly. "I've always made my own gowns and clothing..." maybe the woman could use some help.

He thought about her question for a bit. What DID he do. Nothing, really. He had only been in the city two weeks tops, and was just doing odd jobs here and there just to make enough money to get by. The weather had been nice enough that he could even save money by sleeping outside, not having to pay for lodgings. It was kind of like camping, without the tent and everything else. And nothing had changed when he got into the city, that is what he had been doing on his travels to the city. It was just easier to find odd jobs in the big city, so that was a plus, he guessed. "Umm, nothing special, really. I just do odd jobs like helping unload freight and stuff. The park landscaper's been giving a fair bit of work too. So mainly just physical labor." At least it was a good way to keep in shape, since his master wasn't around to train him with difficult training regimens.
Chase thought that she would be an amazing helper in a dress shop. And it would probably help her with her people skills without over exposing her all at once. "You should see if you can get a job. Just show her something like what you did with that uniform and she'll have to hire you." it really was remarkable the quick and beautiful work she produced from the oversize raddy uniform. She obviously had a talent for this kind of thing, so why not apply it?

The young woman listened as Chase told her what he did for a living and she grew more curious as to why he had travelled to the city in the first place. Usually people had some kind of plan when they moved cities. Then again she had no right to be questioning him about his reasoning in the middle of a busy street.
Mai smiled softly and nodded as she approached the woman out front. She was nervous about talking to someone and glanced over her shoulder again and again as she drew closer. Mai wasn't sure why she felt she needed the reassurance but it was just the urging in the pit of her stomach. Finally she showed the woman her work and she seemed rather impressed by Mai's skills. being untrained by any sort of a professional made it all the more impressive in the eyes of the elderly woman and a warm smile was here reward. The woman said softly in a shaky, uneven voice, "My deary, I could use some help around the shop. It gets so busy and these old fingers can't keep up." she gave a tiny chuckle, followed by a slight wheeze in her voice. Mai smiled happily in thanks and a deal was struck. Mai would work with the elderly woman and learn along side her as they ran the shop, while Mai was offered to the live in the apartment like room above the shop. The elderly woman used to live in the back of the shop and the apartment, but the stairs were too hard for her now she stayed in the one downstairs bedroom.
The blood bender agreed and looked to Chase, wondering if there was anything she could do for him. He didn't have a set job after all. The elderly woman caught her gaze and gave the youth a once over. "well, i could always used a strong hand." she said gently, "ever since my dear Husband passed this old place has taken quite a toll. Do you have any experience in fixing up an old place like this?"

Chase hung back a bit as Mai approached the old lady, giving her a small nod of encouragement as she looked back. This old woman would have to be senile not to see that Mai was talented. Even with no knowledge of the field he could see this. When things looked like they were going well, Chase stepped over, happy that Mai got a job, and now apparently a place to live. It seemed almost too convenient, but it didn't matter. This girl had been through so much, she deserved to have something good happen to her. He was also glad that things worked out the way they did. He wouldn't have to worry about her so much now that he knew she had a place to stay and a constant job. They called it even, he knew, but that didn't mean he wasn't going to stop worrying about her.
Chase felt a little bit conflicted accepting a job from the old woman. Sure it would be nice to have constant work, it's not what he wanted right now. He didn't want people relying on him, but the woman's husband passed away, which made him feel bad. He assumed that the woman either had no children or they just weren't around, or they would take care of those kind of things. "Thank you, but I will have to refuse the job. I will help out with odd things that you need when I'm around." it sounded a little but ambiguous, but at least he still offered to help her out. She obviously needed it.

Mai was slightly disappointed when he refused the job but then again he seemed more like a drifter...chances are he wouldn't be around very long, at least that was her first instinct about this young man. The more they spoke, maybe he was just here to breeze by. He did his good deed and set the little slave girl free and now he could go on his merry way saving girls of the earth kingdom while working odd jobs. However she knew it was just her spite making her think this way, she didn't want him to go...why was she growing so attached!? The young woman was actually very angry at herself for growing to want this person near, it wasn't natural. The old woman spoke first, "Oh that's fine dear, Ms, Toriko will be more than helpful around here. I shant keep you." the elder excused herself from the front of the store as left to make tea for her new employee.
Mai looked to him and gave a sweet smile despite her feelings. "Well..I suppose I'll see you around." she whispered gently. Mai wasn't good with talking through situations. She wasn't used to be being in the situation with another human being in the first place. Never the less she walked up and gave him a small hug before backing away, "I won't keep you..." she turned to look over her shoulder with a sad expression, yet she smiled. It didn't reach her eyes, her eyes were cold...but what was she to tell him? That she was planning to offer him a room in the apartment? That she was excited to have a companion for once in ehr life that didn't want to hurt her? That she thought someone wanted to stick around? Instead she said nothing but, "We're even remember..." she turned away and waited for his footsteps to walk away...

Chase gave a small bow to the woman as she left to go inside to make tea, thanking her again for her offer. He felt kind of bad, but he couldn't help everyone who needed it. He was just happy with the way his life was going right now, and didn't want to alter from that path, not yet, anyways.
He was kind of surprised at her words at first. Did she want him to leave? But with more though, he concluded that maybe she was the one thinking that he wanted to leave, which he didn't. He didn't move from where he was standing, putting his hands in his pockets, "I don't really have any plans for today.." he felt kind of awkward for asking, "Did you maybe want to... I don't know.." dammit he felt so stupid "Have lunch or something? Unless you want me to go.." maybe she just wanted to be left alone or something, he didn't know. But if that was the case he was okay with leaving. He would be disappointed, which was something he wasn't used to feeling. He never really cared what others did, and often liked to be left alone, but he found that he liked spending time with Mai.

Mai tensed for a moment and slowly turned to meet his gaze. Why did he have to defy every expectation she set for him? Why was he so different than everyone she had met before? The young woman was left to stare in curiousity as he looked at her in silence, awaiting her answer. Mai sighed softly, more to herself than anything, before she nodded and excused herself from the elderly woman who was sitting on the front step again sipping her tea. The elder gave her a warm smile and explained that there was no work as of yet for her to do so they would start fresh in the morning. This allowed Mai to get settled into the apartment upstairs. Luckily it was furnished so she didn't need to buy anything, however she would need to get some food and what not from the market polace eventually.
Walking closer to Chase, once the woman was once again midning ehr own business, she asked bluntly, "why do you wish to spend time with me?" she whispered. He has not purchased her, he owed her nothing, and yet he wished for her to get lunch with him? This didn't make sense to her, this type of encounter was completely new territory. Mai knew she would have to get used to acting like a normal citizen but the trust issues were not going to go away over night. "Why do you..." she saw this look in his eyes whenever he glanced her way when he thought she didn't see him. She shook her head and looked away from him with blush dusting her cheeks. "nevermind, let's just...go..."
The pair walked through the streets for a long while, not really talking as Mai was growing more nervous as the seconds ticked by. They stopped by a food stand on the corner, browsing through the menu when Mai felt someone bump into her. Soru peaked out from under her jacket and hissed at the man who was now staring down at her. Mai looked up and met the stare and felt her heart stop. Something about that face...the man didn't speak, he excused himself and hurried down the street away from them. But Mai looked after him, "why do I..." she felt those memories itching to be regained. Why did she know that older man's face?

'why do you wish to spend time with me?' He was a little taken aback by her question, maybe she just wanted to be left alone. If he had gone through what she did he knew that the isolation would be nice. "I don't know..." he retorted "I just like being around you, I guess?" he knew that answer was weak, but he couldn't think of anything else to say on the spot. He was never one to share his emotions, so talking about them was always weird and awkward for the firebender. Trying to voice how he felt or come up with a reason why he felt it, had always been something he failed horribly at. "I don't know anyone here, its also kind of nice having someone around, you know?" why did that sound so pathetic?
He walked beside her as they strode down the street in silence, feeling some tension in the air. He was relieved when they arrived at the cart, glad to have a distraction for a moment. He looked over the menu and ordered food for himself and Zala, turning around as a man bumped into Mai. He noticed the reaction on her face and looked after the man as well. "Do you know that guy?" he asked curiously, looking back to her.

Mai was in a state of shock as she saw that man. She didn`t even hear Chase talking to her as she watched the man watching away at a hasty pace. "I know him..." she whispered, barely above a whisper. "I know....I know him from somewhere..." she whispered again, taking a step in his direction. However she didn't persue it any further and instead retreated back beside Chase. Mai's memories were more like dreams. "I just felt like I've seen him before..." Mai whimpered a little and held her head tightly in her hands, shaking as she tried to calm down. She heard that scream in her head as she eyes shut tightly and she saw more of the dream. Her eyes snapped open as if in a trance as the realization hit her like a lightning bolt.
She was being dragged from her bed, hauled over a man's shoulder and taken from the home. She could see her parents laying on the floor, as if they were sleeping as the house was set on fire. She screamed for them to wake up, to her daddy to come and save her but they didn't move. She saw their eyes...dead....it was then that she was set down and looked into the face of her kidnapper...and her parents killer...then darkness. Mai came back out of it as the memory faded and the pain made the dark fog cloud her mind once more. She snapped her eyes up and glared, "He's a part of this..." she knew that face and there was no way she wasn't going to pass it up. Without another word something snapped and she chased him down. Her body took off down the street and her eyes never left that man. Mai watched as he sped up and started to weeve into the alley ways but she laughed to herself, she was used to trying to escape..she knew these routes better than anyone. She got him trapped in a side alley way and took in a deep breath as she used her bedding and pulled water from some plants to make the ice daggers and struck him in anger.
The girl was in a state liuke she had been with the other men. Grabbing him by the cloak she held one of the daggers to his neck. Seeing his face...she knew. "Remember me?" she said, her breathing laboured from running, "do you remember my face..?"
