Chase couldn't believe what he was hearing. These people just meet their long lost daughter, and they were going to push her away by shoving their customs down her throat. Jaw clenched in anger, he answered Sire "I'm not fighting anybody." he retorted, glad that Mai was taking over with the talking. He probably would have lost his temper and said something he would have regretted. He blushed a little at her words, he didn't know she felt that way about him and Hiyro. He hadn't really thought of it that way before, but she was right, they were each other's family. And that's all he really needed.
He was ready to leave with Mai when he mother stopped her, saying they would talk about it later, but to enjoy the celebrations for now. It would have been a shame for them to leave, having all these people been working on the preparations for the celebration. The smell of cooking food was already filling the air. "I think we should stay, at least for tonight." he told her. Chase didn't want her to miss out on the opportunity to meet her family and get to know them a little better, at least for a night. If they persisted in the morning with this, they would probably leave.

Mai nodded and followed them up the steps to their sleeping quarters for the night. It had a queen sized bed covered in furs and thick blankets, and a day bed that had the same dressings. Hiyro was given the day bed to herself with the pets while Mai and Chase would take the bed tonight if all went well at the so called party. Once Hiyro was comfortable Mai sat on the bed and took out her hair, leaving it down for the party. The waves curls cascaded down her back by now and she went through her bag to find something suitable. It was a different coat that she made in case something came up. It had beading, embroidery and more elaborate but not over doing it. Mai looked different, like a real water bender woman, however the blood jewels were still hanging on her neck.
She turned and smiled to Hiyro, doing her hair for thr party but not really saying anything else. She was quiet for a long while before she looked to Chase, "Just...stay close during the party." she asked as she walked to him, "I don't want anyone messing with you." she kissed him softly. "And I need to make sure these water benders don't steal you away."

Chase sat on the bed and watched Mai get herself and Hiyro ready for the celebrations. He didn't have any intentions on changing or anything beforehand, maybe comb his hair a little, but other then that he was going as is. He kept his jacket on inside, it was even freezing inside, even though there was a small fire crackling in the corner. Hiyro didn't seem to mind, though. She actually seemed more chipper since the plane landed. After they were ready, Chase stood up, ready to go down. "You both look beautiful." he said, patting Hiyro's head, careful not to mess up her hair. He had learnt that lesson the hard way, she freaked out on him once after Mai did her hair and he messed it up by ruffling it playfully.
Chase tried not to take offense to Mai's words, but it was kind of hard. He was perfectly capable of taking care of himself, even if he was surrounded by water benders. "I'll be fine, let's just try to have a good time, forget about all that shit your dad said."

Mai smiled softly to him and nodded, holding his hand and making sure Hiyro was right with them as they walked out of their chambers and traveled back down the steps. As they left the house Mai could tell there was tension going on in their discussions from the way she was holding Chase, but she wasn't about to throw away the only person she had ever felt love for, her real family for some strangers who claimed to love her. She sighed and lowered her eyes, feeling the eyes on her as they walked towards where the large bonfire that had people dancing around it. They were enjoying the festivies that had started as the food was grilled on open pit fires.
The joined in a few dances, really just clapping along as the people enjoyed themselves. Mai knew how to dance but she didn't feel like it was right for her dance after how she had been dancing and what it had been for. However she was known for her dancing, it was how she brought in so many customers, she was beautiful when she danced. She stayed quiet and simply danced a little with Hiyro as the music played around them.
The dinner went off without a hitch as the people embraced their lost tribe member. However as the night wore on a young man approached. He wasn't rude but when he introduced himself Mai realized this was the man her father had mentioned. "I'm so glad to finally meet you..." he whispered.
"My apologise for your long wait but there seems to be a misunderstanding."
"It's not a problem, your mother informed me of your prior," The young man eyed Chase, "involvement. It was foolish of me to wait anyway, I suppose it just wanted to meet you, to know. That's all."
Mai gave him a sweet smile and went to turn away to go back to Chase and Hiyro but bumped into a server and among the tumble her blood gems were torn from her neck and the beads tumbled near the fire put. "Oh I'm so sorry miss." thr server said but Mai watched in panic as her ex-fiance went to gather the beads....the beads melted next to the fire....she watched as he touched them and watched the horror cross his eyes.
"You're a..."
Mai shook her head, "I can explain!"
"Blood bender!" he shouted and everyone stopped and looked at her.

As they walked out to the festival, it was obvious that there was still some bad feelings towards what had just happened. The tension in the air among the family members was palpable, but once they all joined the celebrations, it all seemed to melt away. Chase spent most of the time next to the large bonfire but stayed close to Mai, he didn't care for dancing, and preferred to stay next to the heat. Even though the coats Mai made were warm, but there was nothing compared to the warmth of a roaring fire. Especially one this big. He had to resist the urge to bend and play with the flames, it probably would have freaked out the water benders.
Chase saw Mai talking to a man, he could only assume it was who they were speaking about earlier. There weren't many people in this village that were around their age, from what he had seen. The loathsome look he cast Chase also gave him away. He didn't look like much, just a typical water tribe male, definitely a bender from the way he moved. As they finished their conversation, Chase headed over to see if Mai was okay, but his thoughts were interrupted as the events of the situation that Chase hadn't seen unfolded. Panic started to flare up in the crowd as the word 'blood bender' was called out.
It was obvious that most of them were either horrified or appalled at the fact that they had a blood bender in their midst. Chase pushed through some people getting between Mai and the crowd. "Listen to me." Chase called out to the people. "Mai has never used her blood bending on any innocents. She did what she had to do to survive, any of you would have done the same if you were in her situation!" he was almost yelling, angry at these people for judging so quickly. It probably didn't help hearing these words from a fire bender, but they had to be said.

Mai was on the ground from her fall and almost afraid to get up as the people around her seemed to pay little attention to the words Chase yelled to them. They were a small tribe with small views, and blood bending could be scary, especially when she had kept them like trophies. but to her, keeping them let her remind herself that she didn't have to be afraid of those forces anymore, that it was over and they couldn't control her anymore. "She's a witch! Blood blending is a dark art!"
"Get her away!"
"Why is she allowed near that child!?" a woman pointed out as Hiyro was near her after she fell. "She's a poison to her!" Mai hugged Hiyro and stood behind Chase.
"You are not going to take my family from me!" Mai shouted as she stood on front of Hiyro to protect her. "No one is taking them from me! EVER!" she felt her blood boiling as she watched them glare at her.
"Let's just leave..." Mai begged Chase didn't get a chance as a water bender started to attack. Mai was blasted with a shock of ice water, sending her into a snow bank. The water bending tribe blocked Chase off from the fight as her mother came to explain to him, "someone is challenging her as a new comer...." she whispered, "you must stay back. If she proves herself before them it could sway their decisions."
Mai coughed as she found her footing and glared at the woman who stepped forward...her sister.
"My own sister, how could you become such a thing? Blood bending is forbidden!"
"You think I didn't know that? I may not have been raised in a cozy home but it was that dark art that got me free from my life!"
"Think of the people that suffer because of it?!"
"I suffered without it!" Mai screamed as she charged her own sister with her ice blades made over her fists. She leapt and landed over her sister, her knees on braced on either side of her sister's body and the blades crossed over her neck. "You know nothing what I had to go through to get here, what we had to fight against to try and save his family, to try and free me, to try and live a life you take for granted!" Mai raised the blade and watched her flinched. "You idiot...as if I'd cut you open so easily..." she got off of her, "I can blood bend you at any time, I can destroy you I wanted to, what makes me different..." Mai looked over her shoulder at the shocked faces, "is that I don't...." She watched them as they let the guilt sink in. "This evening has revealed a little too much for me to handle. Excuse me." Mai hurried her steps and walked to where the Emu horses were kept in the barns. She went into the stall and sat on the hay bail quietly. "I really don't fit anywhere..."

He had a feeling that this would be the general reaction to finding out Mai was a blood bender. It was unfortunate, but the reputation of the craft just didn't allow for any of it's users to be seen normally, at least by people not knowing of the circumstances. He had to admit, the fact that she had the ability did scare him a little, but he knew she would never use it on him again. He trusted her.
He felt bad, but with this reaction, he knew they wouldn't be able to stay here, or have Mai build a relationship with her family. They were just too set in their old fashioned ways. A gasp of shock escaped Chase's mouth as the cold water rushed over Mai and Chase, separating the two. The villager crowded around Chase, preventing the thrashing Fire bender from interfering with the battle. He was about to start attacking when Mai's mother explained that this might be the chance for Mai to be accepted. A fight of honor, bacically. And those fights weren't to be messed with. If something horrible happened he would fight to step in, but for now, he knew that Mai had to fight this on her own.
He kept Hiyro close as Mai fought, the small girl burying her eyes in his pants, He knew she would be devastated if something happened to Mai. So would he, of course. Chase ran after Mai when she left the fight, carrying Hiyro with him. He didn't trust those villagers anymore, he wouldn't leave Hiyro alone with them. Sitting next to Mai, he didn't know what to say, and instead put his arm around her, kissing the top of her head.

Mai leaned into him and searched for comfort as they sat there in the stable. "We need to hurry and get our things. They're not going to sit back now that they know." Mai stood and looked to the Emu Horses, starting to saddle them up. She didn't want Hiyro in danger of anything if the fighting proceeded. The young woman smiled reassuringly to them, drying her tears best she could. It was not the time to be crying over such things, they needed to get some where safe. "We should head the the north east, closing to the sea side edge of the water nation."
After the emu horses were readied she headed to the house and started to pack their things as her mother waited in the door way. "Leaving so soon dear?"
"Dont call me that, I say the look on your faces." she said with venom in her voice. "I'm leaving and I'm not coming back, you can tell the masses that the witch wont be returning any time soon." she grabbed all the bags, making sure the pets were following as Soru was perched on ehr shoulder. "Goodbye mother." she walked out the door, sending a glare to her father and sister as she passed them.

Chase felt horrible at this situation, but he knew that she was right. These people were so set in their ways, they wouldn't be able to see past something like this. He didn't think that people still lived in such old traditions. But then again, his family had partaken some odd traditions. He also didn't want anything to happen to Hiyro, he feared they would try to take her away from them because they thought that Mai wasn't fit to be around her. He thought the opposite, though, they all weren't fit to be around them. They were so set in their way that they would do all of this to their own daughter. They all disgusted him.
Kissing her forehead, he looked down at her, a small smile on his lips, trying to cheer her up at least a little. "Good idea. We can start heading towards the city." At least things would be more civilized their, hopefully.
Chase went into the house with her, Hiyro on his back, and helped collect everything. He said nothing, but the anger towards them in his eyes was enough of a message. Hopefully they saw what they were doing, and where they were wrong. He knew they had little to no chance to get forgiveness from Mai, but he hoped they wouldn't do something like this in the future.
They walked out and got onto the emu horses as the villagers watched, he could feel their hatred. He was glad they were leaving this place. "Let's go."
