Rahn Moon-Tieng
name: Rahn
gender: Male
age: 22
element: Fire
animal companion: -
::looking pretty good
hair color: Black
eye color: hazel, right eye has a permanently dilated pupil
skin color: Fair
overall appearance:
Rahn is thin, lean man of average height. He’s a little less than 5’8 tall and looks to be shorter than that because of his constant habit of slouching. He has long shiny black hair, that reaches down to his shoulder blades and he keeps it on a neat braid. Rahn’s eyes are the shade of dark hazel with a hint of green, but in a certain light they appear almost amber-like. The pupil of his right eye is permanently more dilated than the other, resulting in the effect of him looking slightly cross-eyed. He has sharp facial features, with prominent cheekbones and a pointy chin, but also a long forehead that makes his face look almost heart-shaped.
Rahn has multiple burn scars all over his body, most prominent being the ones on his arms and legs, which start from the wrists and ankles and twist around his arms and calves up to his elbows and knees. He keeps them covered with clothing.
For clothing Rahn prefers dark somber colors, lots of grays and blacks. He loves to wear fitted vests over long sleeved shirts and prefers tight fitting pants much to the horror of any fashionista in Republic City. He wears a lot of jewelry, typically large golden earrings and a number of bracelets on both wrists.
::what I'm thinking
likes: Gardening, calligraphy, satomobiles, cold water and swimming in it, golden jewelry, good tailoring, small furry animals, privacy[/blockquote]
dislikes: Fire, pro-bending, sudden movements and loud noises, persistent salesmen, people who are completely tone deaf but insist on singing anyway
sexuality: homosexual
overall personality:
Rahn is a firebender only in theory. He has not mastered his bending at all, due to having no inner calm and being unable to truly focus on anything for long periods of time. He has a very short attention span; his mind tends to jump from one topic to another like a rabbiroo on steroids. He has also repressed his sexual inclinations all his life and is only now starting to come to terms with them, usually opting to feel guilty and ashamed of them simply out of habit. These two things coupled with his tendency to avoid confrontation have resulted in him having almost no control over his bending and often serve to make him feel frustrated with himself. Most of his scars are actually results of him setting himself on fire due to getting angry or frustrated over not being able to bend properly. It’s a vicious circle he’d do anything to break, if only to stop hurting himself and others by accident. Unfortunately he seems to be almost as intent on avoiding any interaction what so ever with his element.
He has a very strong dislike for fire (almost a fear, really), and will immediately change direction if he spots a firebender openly displaying their ability.
Despite repressing a major part of his natural urges, Rahn is not really what you’d call a brooding guy. He’s polite and relatively friendly. He does not seek social interaction but does not run away from it either, should someone come over to talk to him, although he’s often nervous around other people. He tends to ask a lot of questions once he gets comfortable with conversing and jumps from topic to topic in such a way, which often confuses people he’s talking with.
He’s a private person and likes to spend time by himself, usually doing gardening and walking in the park. He is curious and interested in machinery and dreams of getting a driving license and his own satomobile, although his unsolved and untreated attention span issues keep him from getting one currently.
He is very passionate about the things he likes often to the point of obsession. He has a tendency to get bored of things quickly and once he does his initial affection usually turns to outright dismissal and dislike. Because of this it is rather hard for him to maintain healthy relationships, since people tend to find him unbearable.
Rahn has a very limited sense of humor. He has almost no understanding of sarcasm and irony and most jokes usually fly straight past him. He is fond of puns though, much to the aggravation of others.
::a past to remember
Rahn was born in the Fire Nation as the youngest of four siblings. His father was a firebender and a politician working in a minor capacity for the United Republic. His mother was of Earth Kingdom heritage, a non-bender chosen by his father to further his career and relations in Ba Sing Se. They had a happy, convenient marriage with no illusions of unnecessary affection.
Out of their four children, Rahn was the only one able to firebend and his talent was discovered soon after he had turned six years old. Unfortunately the initial happiness of his gift turned to disappointment once his parents realized he had no way of controlling his bending. He could not conjure even a single puff of smoke when he put his mind to it, but during a spout of sibling rivalry he got angry and accidentally burned both himself and his brother. It soon became clear that he could only bend when he was overcome by emotion; otherwise he had no focus and thus no bending.
Learning to read and write was very difficult for Rahn and his more accomplished siblings often teased him about his way of getting distracted by every little thing. Because of this Rahn grew to dislike them, with the only exception being his elder brother Yura, whom he had burned. His affection was mostly due to guilt, seeing as Yura’s injuries were so severe their parents did not allow him to be seen in public after the “unfortunate accident”. Rahn tried spending as much time with him as possible, to make amends for what he’d done and mostly their relationship was based on Yura using Rahn as his gopher.
Rahn would do anything at the behest of his brother and this often led to him getting injured over some stupid dare or getting punished for going against his parents’ wishes. Sometimes he wondered if Yura was setting him up for punishment as a sort of revenge but he did not dare question his brother’s actions after what he’d done to him.
As he grew older, Rahn’s parent discovered that the boy had some talent in gardening especially in designing and making topiary. Although he had talent and seemed to enjoy working in the gardens, Rahn would often start working on something and then leave it unfinished, not being able to hold his interest for long. Despite this he felt gardening offered him a sense of escapism; an escape to some place where he was special and not some laughable mistake like his siblings often said he was.
This pastime also introduced Rahn to his first love, much to the chagrin of his parents. As if he wasn’t enough of a disappointment already, he was seen showing an unnatural amount of affection towards the family’s head gardener. At first they thought his feelings were purely that of a pupil idolizing his mentor, and dismissed the gardener’s initial worries over the direction the relationship was taking. It wasn’t until Rahn tried openly kissing the gardener that his parents took the hint and intervened by dismissing their trusted employee and physically reprimanding their son for having feelings for him in the first place.
This made Rahn feel even more like an alien amidst his own family. He no longer tried confiding in his parents and outright refused to acknowledge his attraction towards the same sex. The emotional stress over this caused his bending to go haywire more often than not resulting in a number of incidents where he accidentally burned either himself or another person. These incidents served to embarrass Rahn’s father and to make Rahn ever more fearful of fire.
When Rahn was twenty-one years old his father finally grew tired of looking at him and covering for the damages he was prone to causing. He had married off his eldest son and daughter, his second youngest son was maimed to the point that it was hard to even look at him without feeling sick and his youngest child was a freak of nature out of his control. Rumors were spreading about his family life and when he was dismissed from the service of the United Republic, he decided it was time for Rahn to go.
He shipped Rahn off to stay at his uncle’s house in Republic City, disowning him in the process and washing his hands clean from the matter. He figured if Rahn was to cause problems in the bustling metropolis, it would not be his fault, or his concern. He’d be someone else’s problem now.
Little did he know that in a way he’d be liberating his son, as he was no longer constricted and forced to live under his parent’s thumb.
