I guess I'm stuck here in Republic City for now, Kalanni thought as she yearningly gazed out at the arriving and leaving trains. She wanted oh so badly to just get on one of them and let it take her far, far away. Maybe even to the North Pole. All Kalanni wanted to do was start a new life, far away from her old one, in Republic City.
Kalanni held her polar dog, Nasa, in her hands as she sat down on a bench. I just wish I could go on one of those trains, she thought. She gently ran her fingers through Nasa's ungroomed fur. It's been a while since we've actually slept on real beds or lived in a real house, with other people taking care of us. I'm glad that's over.
Closing her eyes, Kalanni remembered how she had run away from home, taking nothing but Nasa with her. She pushed her hand inside of her empty pockets. Why didn't I take enough money for me to get out of Republic City? Mom and Dad would never have noticed a few missing yuans.
A train passed by on the tracks, and the air it blew in Kalanni's face pushed back her hair. She blinked her eyes, trying to see through the force if air. The train passed, and she opened her eyes again. Is this what I'm going to do for the rest of my life? Sit here and watch the trains, never being able to go on one of them?
Feeling her stomach growl, Kalanni was once again reminded of her hunger. "You hungry, Nasa?" she asked her loyal companion. Suppressing a sigh, Kalanni looked around, her eyes searching for some source of food. Or maybe simething to make my life more interesting than this.
