Pre Acolyte: Image
Arruk's brown hair hangs in dreadlocks to his shoulders. His body is well muscled due to years of training and hard work as a fisherman. He wears traditional looking water tribe clothing and colors, though his clothes are suited to a warmer climate than those worn at the poles. His hands are calloused and rough. His eyes seem to carry a deep sadness masked by apathy and occasionally, anger. He is tall, standing at just under 6 feet. He is never seen without his bending pouch, or his whale tooth necklace.
Post Acolyte: Image
The only real difference in Arruk's appearance is that he has shaved his head (though he has left his beard) and he now wears the traditional Air Acolyte robes. The only items he has kept from his previous life are his bending pouch and the whale tooth necklace.
::what I'm thinking
likes: caligraphy, the ocean, quiet, to be working with his hands, wine, being alone
dislikes: meditating, crowds, loud noises, talking about himself, tea
sexuality: heterosexual
overall personality:
Though Arruk is a quiet man, he is not as introspective as others might think him to be. His silence hides no mystical knowledge or secret. He is simply a quiet man. Most of his life, Arruk was content to be such. He worked hard and was content with what he had. But recent events have brought fourth a deep well of emotion that he himself is baffled by. Sudden and intense eruptions of anger and frustration can blindside him, bringing out a darker side of himself that he fears.
Arruk is attempting to understand why he has so recently become such a wreck, and has turned to the ways of the Air Nomads in search for answers. Unfortunately, meditation and other practices prove to be more frustrating for him than helpful.
Aside form this problem, Arruk is a kind man. Generous at every opportunity, he will not refuse the company of others. Though, to expect him to go out of his way to seek it would only lead to disappointment. He is certainly no leader, and prefers to blend into a group than to stand out. Or better yet, he prefers to watch others from the sidelines. As the silent observer, he is quite content.
::a past to remember
Arruk was born to a fairly small village on an island between the south pole and the Fire Nation islands. Though their island saw a great deal of trade with the other nations, the village consisted primarily of water tribe folk. His father was one of only a handful of benders on the island, and was very pleased when Arruk showed the talent as well.
As a fisherman, Arruk's father began to take him out on his boat as soon as the boy was old enough. Here, Arruk would help his father with the nets and his father would train him. Apart from his time spent in his small schoolhouse, this was his life for as far back as Arruk can remember. Like his father, Arruk was a quiet soul, and the two would often go long stretches, working side by side, in blissful silence. The work was hard, but rewarding, and as the years passed, Arruk showed great skill as both a fisherman and a bender.
Because he was so quiet, Arruk made few friends. Those who did manage to get to know him well would testify to his kindness and his loyalty. But those who did not know him well simply saw him as a recluse. Even when he trained with other benders, he preferred the quiet, smooth motions of the form over the theatrics others tried to display.
The day when Arruk first saw Hana marked a change in his solitary behavior. His courtship of the girl was still a very quiet affair. He would make her small trinkets, carving them from wood or weaving strands of cloth together to make bracelets and necklaces. These gifts would often be left at her family's home, rarely given in person. Finally, Hana approached Arruk, affirming that she was pleased with his attention. Hana would say that Arruk's silence made him mysterious, and that she was determined to find out what lie beneath his quiet surface.
The two were married and settled into a small home Arruk built near the water. He showered his new wife in his manner of affection; privately, but often. He worked tirelessly to ensure his wife wanted for nothing, and Hana was quick to assure her friends that he was a loving man.
Arruk's father passed away a few years after he and Hana married. Though many would not be able to tell, the loss affected Arruk deeply. His mother gave him his father's whale tooth necklace, telling him that it had belonged to the men of his family for many generations. Arruk has since never taken it off.
More years would pass, and in that time Hana came to learn that there was no hidden mystery to her husband. There was no secret to discover behind the silence. Arruk was who he was, and for whatever reason, she was disappointed. In spite of his continued devotion, she found herself unable to love him in return, and soon began to turn to another,
When Arruk discovered her betrayal, one fateful evening, something inside of him snapped. Arruk attacked the man, beating him over and over until he no longer moved. Hana was horrified and Arruk was in shock. So was the village. No one came near him after that, but stared and walked away whenever he came near. Arruk was ashamed for what he had done, and the weight of their eyes only worsened the feeling. After only a few days, he fled their sight and judgement, buying passage on the first ship leaving the island.
That ship has brought him to Republic City.
Note: I will be RPing Arruk's process of joining the Air Acolytes. I hope this is ok.
