Neela stands at the unimpressive height of 5’1” but there’s an assured stomp in her pace. Most of her waist long hair is caught back in a green tie and has a tendency to be wavy around the edges. Naturally pale, her fair skin burns easily in the glare of the sun. She observes the world through bright green eyes and although she doesn’t appear to overdo her makeup, she does have a love for outlining her cat-like eyes.
Her wardrobe is simple and generally traditionally earth kingdom style. All sorts of greens and golds fill her dresser. It’s not rare to see dust and mud across her clothes at the end of the day. A curl of metal that could be taken for a whip from a distance hangs by her sash-belt, its handle bears the intricately detailed head of a komodo rhino at the top.
Normally stern faced, Neela seems to have “Fuck Off” written across her forehead, until you start talking to her. She appears to be a very serious person for her age, for those who don’t know her when she’s at ease. She can surprise with a wide variety of facial expressions. Although evidently female she doesn’t have a single article of jewelry on her. Her voice is rather pleasant and the occasional few who might have heard her sing could say she’s not bad, although her vocal range fails to impress and she won’t be an amazing singer anytime soon.

overall personality:
Neela is as stubborn as a dragon ox. Once she gets her mind up to something she won’t back down from the pursuit no matter the danger or cost. She’s an avid advice ignorer. It’s very difficult for her to admit being wrong, so the best anyone can hope for is having her quietly back down. Straightforward to the point of rudeness, she doesn’t give much thought to how she words things. On the rare occasion, and if the situation really requires it, she’ll censor her frankness or at least lower it down a few notches. She’s not afraid to tell people exactly what she thinks of them and she wouldn’t give a rotten rat’s tail for their impression.
Careful and thorough, with an eye for detail, she leaves no rock unturned, no voice unheard and no rat unfollowed when looking into a situation. With a love for puzzles and a keen eye, she’s always had a bend towards detective work. Determined and ambitious, she hopes to one day be one of the best investigators in Republic City. Naturally suspicious, she doubts first, asks questions later, which has led her on no few occasions into falsely accusing someone innocent. For someone who upholds the law, she sure does go against it a lot for taking matters into her own hands. She doesn’t shy away from working outside the rules when justice fails to serve the guilty party with proper punishment. Neela is rather self-righteous.
Although self-assured and confident, she’s not without naiveté and shyness. The latter play a role in the realm of love and interest. Her awkwardness reaches its peak when in the presence of a potential interest and she doesn’t cope well with receiving that sort of attention from people who are not indifferent to her. Horrendously afraid of rejection, she chooses to be avoidant about the whole matter. Inexperienced and private, she doesn’t appreciate familiar touch from unfamiliar individuals.
Moralistic and righteous, she doesn’t tolerate injustice, oppression and the profiteering off the poor. She’s openly militaristic about it. Compassionate, caring and tender hearted underneath her tough exterior, she actively seeks to aid the unfortunate, find homes for strays and general do what she can for others. Possessed of a somewhat reckless curiosity, she oftentimes gets herself into situations that don’t exactly raise her life expectancy.
::a past to remember[/font]
Born in warm weather on Kyoshi island, Neela was named after her grandmother on her father’s side. Her mother was a traditional Kyoshi warrior who preserved their traditions and taught them to the next generation so they wouldn’t be lost to modern day. Her father, an earthbender originally from Ba Sing Se, was anything but traditional and had studied metalbending at the Bei Fong Academy.
Neela was being groomed into becoming Nisa’s successor in the Kyoshi warrior dojo until the age of 5 when she discovered she had her father’s bending. Immediately excited about it, her father decided he wanted more for her than the islander life and after long persuasion, managed to convince Nisa too that they should follow his vision and relocate to Republic City. Leaving the dojo to her best student and master in her own right, Nisa accompanied Neela and Gero to Republic City where they worked hard to gain a home and reasonable comfort and education for their young daughter.
Growing up with love, support and without want for food and shelter, Neela was a conscientious, opinionated and dedicated student of earthbending and metalbending shortly after. Her father obtained a position as a metalbending officer; her mother turned her hobby of seamstressing into a profession, so the Ning Ruis became a permanent part of the city.
At the age of 9, Neela met Fuki, another Metalbender in training and the two have been best friends since. Fuki is a carefree, joyful, reckless wisp of a girl who knows best how to annoy Neela but also how to comfort her. The two have gotten into trouble together throughout their childhood and into adolescence. They became Pro Bending fans together.
It was at the age of 13, during one of the Pro Bending tournaments that Neela saw Farruk, the blue eyed, dark skinned waterbender of the Komodo Rhinos. He was tall, graceful as only a waterbender could be, with lively eyes and a charming smile. Fuki fell for the temperamental firebender, Luko, and instantly, both girls became fans of the Komodo Rhinos. When Fuki’s obsession with her flame producing Pro Bender turned into stalking, Neela followed her example. However, Fuki was far more daring than her friend, also two years older, after two years of fanatism, she finally managed to get the 20 year old Luko’s attention and the two began dating.
It was through Luko that 15 year old Neela was introduced to the 21 year old Farruk who saw her as nothing more than a girl with her eyes on her shoes. Regardless, the two tied a close friendship, where Farruk turned out being more of a mentor towards Neela. When the waterbender chose to retire from Pro Bending and returned to the Northern Water Tribe, Neela was 17 and decided. After two months from his leave, she spontaneously took leave of her studies and followed him to the north pole. After falling into freezing water, getting into a quarrel with an old lady and stressing the heart out of herself with nervousness, she burst into his house and confessed, her cheeks at their reddest moment.
It was then that Farruk’s new girlfriend walked through the door after her with a risen eyebrow. This was not the first time Farruk was with someone else but for the past year he had remained single and although she had always known in the depths of her heart that he really had never seen her in such a way, she had needed to try and make it clear. The awkward day ended up in her having a small bucket of ice cream with the man that had been her friend and life advisor, her unrequited love for five years. It turned out that the “new” girlfriend, no, fiancé, wasn’t new after all. She had been Farruk’s first love, lost to distance, and now after all the events of their lives, brought back again. Through ice cream scoops Neela listened to Farruk practically explain how she was his true love. It was all she had needed to hear.
In a week she was being hauled back to Republic City on a sky bison. Fuki had become an Air Acolyte, of all things, and had come to retrieve her moping friend. Feeling like a large part of her life had been forcefully taken from her, Neela distracted herself with her bending and became more and more interested in detective work. If in the past following the news and piecing together crime patterns had been a mere hobby now it was becoming an obsession. She no longer stayed in and watched but started doing her own thing, a young freelance investigator no one had a place for yet. She needed to finish her studies before she could join the police force, and she didn’t even know if she wanted to. Working from within the confines of the law didn’t seem all that appealing at all.
Around the age of 15 she had also become interested in engineering and metalwork, but her interest never developed fully. Regardless, she learned to tend to her own Satomobile she received as a birthday present on her 16th birthday. Being able to personally smooth out the dents produced by beginner faulty reckless driving was a bonus to not getting grounded. Her talent for metalbending and related education also allowed her to get employed at Sato Industries while she figured out what she wanted to do in life.
Neela has a little brother, 8 years younger than herself, whom she is occasionally left in charge of. When she had been 14, his first earthbending had almost sent her flying off a cliff.
Now 18 years old, Neela lost her father two month after her birthday. He was killed during an altercation with a group of hostile non benders during duty and Neela hasn’t stopped digging into it since. Because of his job, the entire family had somewhat of an awareness about the risen crime rate and assaults reported on benders by non-benders and this is making Neela increasingly distrustful of anyone not possessing bending. She feels like joining officer training to follow her father’s footsteps but has conflicting emotions about it. He had been the dutiful man who never questioned authority while she listened to no one but herself.
Maybe with time, life would bring answers.
