Bai Hu is a rather tall man, standing at five feet and eleven inches. He is quite toned, especially around his legs and back. His facial features are angular - complete with small almond-shaped eyes, high cheekbones, prominent jaw-bone, and a high nose bridge. His upper lip is small while his lower lip is slightly larger. His hair, which used to be long, and now cut short and styled in a rather conservative manner. The earth-bender also has a prominent scar, which runs horizontally through the right-side from his mouth. He does have a tattoo - a "Japonesque" and beautiful black-and-white design of a white tiger that covers his entire back. This tattoo, however, is never revealed to anyone since it's a reminder of his past with the triad.

Since Bai Hu is usually on the job, he typically wears his police uniform. When he isn't working, he wears the usual attire for a normal civilian - a brown coat that is fastened across his chest, black pants, and black shoes. He refuses to wear anything short-sleeved, considering he would be showing a bit of his tattoo, and prefers to wear earthy colors in order to not appear too flamboyant.

It's rather shocking that Bai Hu doesn't seem to be jaded with life in the slightest bit if you consider his past. Or perhaps that how he appears to everyone. He is able to casually socialize with anyone. People have described him as warm and friendly without being too over-bearing. He also seems deeply rooted and calm, a far-fetch demeanor one would expect from a neglected child and a former criminal. Yet he prefers to remain casual with most people and almost always puts up a shield when it comes to discussing about his past, giving him a rather mysterious aura. He doesn't have a problem with a friendly debate about the best pro-bending team. But he does have an issue when it comes to discussing about his family.

Bai Hu is also rather serious about his job. A former criminal, he now takes the righteous path. He is also serious about training and forbids himself to consume unhealthy food and drink, especially alcohol. Bai Hu is determined that he will no longer set him up for failure. Thus he he tries to get rid of all his demons. The earth-bender loathes failure and is rather hard on himself when he fails to catch the perpetrator for even the smallest crime. Bai Hu also doesn't feel comfortable with leading or even instructing, often refusing to instruct young recruits unless the chief forces him to. He prefers to take the backseat, afraid that he might lead others to harm if he does so.

Bai Hu Fang was born as Yan Fang in a small village located in the western region of the Earth Kingdom. The earth-bender has no recollection of his mother either except for stories. His mother, Mei, was a teenage non-bender who used to work for a noble family in Ba Sing Se until she became pregnant. Although the identity of his biological father still remains unknown, it's been rumored that the infant was a product of an affair between Mei and a member of that noble family who also happened to be an earth-bender. Being young, Mei was reluctant in raising her child and left her son in the care of her mother. The boy was raised in a relatively stable home until the discovery of his earth-bending skills at the age of seven. His grandmother sent the boy to train under a local earth-bending master.

The manifestation of his rebellious side began. The boy slightly held cynical feelings towards his grandmother for sending him away to live with a strict and authoritarian instructor. Yet the hard work did pay off and the boy shown an exceptional gift in the art of earth-bending. Three years later, at the age of ten, he was moved again to master another art of bending - metal-bending - at the Beifong Metalbending Academy. There, he met the only person who became closest to him, Ying-jie, another boy who was five years his senior. Ying-jie also gave the boy his name, Bai Hu, due to his prowess in strength, fair skin, and his talent in the art of bending. Three years later, at the age of thirteen, Ying-jie confronted Bai Hu after dark and offered him a chance to escape the academy and accompany him to Republic City. Since Bai Hu admired his friend, even to a degree in which it became questionable, couldn't refuse such an offer.

Life was tough in Republic City. Bai Hu blindly followed Ying-jie and accompanied him wherever he went. They started doing small runs for the Triple Threat Triad. As Ying-jie rose in rank, the assignments eventually grew bigger and more dangerous. Despite this, Bai Hu still remained loyal to his friend out of love. Perhaps it was love that ran deeper than friendship. When Bai Hu was eighteen, Ying-jie killed a local shopkeeper and his family when he refused to be extorted for money. The Triple Threat Triad wasn't happy with Ying-jie's impulsive act of murder, immediately cutting him off. Since Bai Hu was closely associated with Ying-jie and was at the scene of the crime, he was also barred from associating himself with the triad. Not only they were threatened by their former triad, they were also being chased by the Metalbending Police Force. The police first cornered Bai Hu. They promised a lighter sentence if he were to lure Ying-jie into a trap. Bai Hu, although he was very reluctant at first, finally agreed to it and was able to help them in capturing Ying-Jie. His former partner was immediately punished for his crimes. On the other hand, Bai Hu, who was originally promised a lighter sentence was given a new offer of amnesty. Unlike Ying-jie, Bai Hu exhibited an exceptional talent in the art of earth-bending and metal-bending. Thus he would be a valuable asset to the police force. It was the optional, the earth-bender could always serve a light yet lengthy prison term. And when he was freed, there wouldn't be anything waiting for him except the threat of the Triple Threat Triad. Thus Bai Hu took the offer in joining the Metalbending Police Force.
