Chiru stands at about 5'7", with long cascading black hair and piercing green eyes. She likes to keep her hair hanging down, fluffed and carefully placed around her face to make her look effortlessly sexy. She has a heart-shaped face, and fine features - small lips, small nose, and almond-shaped eyes. Her chest is virtually flat, so she makes her face look gorgeous to subtract from the lack of breasts. However, her curves start again at her legs, where they are strong and athletic. She often wears boots, leggings, a knee-length flowing skirt, and a tight-fitting t-shirt, all the same shade of earth green. She'll wear heavy makeup during the day, with thick black eyeliner and bright red lipstick. She is a dancer at night, in which she'll wear traditional geisha costume and makeup, and occasionally she participates in pro-bending matches, in which she'll wear the required armor and helmet, covering up her pretty hair and face.

Chiru is a very subtle person. She is sexy and flirtatious, but she is hard to open up to others. This girl is the type that will give small, non-revealing smiles and mutters quiet words that may or may have not included personal information. She is a strong person, though, and she will portray that, even if she is not easy to trust others. On one side, she is flirty and sexy, often turning heads in a room. A brilliant lover already at her young age, she is often thought to be much older than she really is. On the other side, she is forceful and blunt, and is not afraid to say or do hurtful things in order to get information she wants or otherwise. Chiru always carries a dagger in her boot, and she often prefers to use it rather than her earthbending as a form of force.

She was raised to believe in the strength of a woman, and therefore she will often reject any help or sincere kindness that is offered to her by men. She does not believe in fatherly love, as the occurrence of losing her father was never properly or directly explained to her. Chiru has an idea that she and her mother were abandoned by her father, rather than the other way around. She has made it her goal to protect girls and women who are put in danger, and she will often defend them against the slightest thing, such as a disrespectful cat call or whistle.

Chiru was born to Yumi Miki and Narye Matsuya, a happy couple just outside Republic City. When she was very young, her grandmother on her father's side would start to visit when her father was out. Her grandmother and mother would discuss things together, and almost every time, her grandmother would ask her to try to earthbend, to no avail. She'll come round, Grandmother would always say, patting a relieved Yumi on the shoulder. During these visits, the two women would often stress to Chiru the importance of being a strong woman and not being dependent on men. She was also never to speak of these visits to her father, something that Chiru felt was a very important thing to do.

So she was raised as two different people - a hardheaded feminist, and a normal, beautiful girl. One day, when she was nearly thirteen, she finally moved that pebble, and before the day was halfway through, her favorite things were packed in a bag and they were going away. When she asked what was happening, and why her father wasn't coming, she got vague answers. Daddy wouldn't understand why we're taking you, Grandmother would say, don't worry about him anymore. He won't come looking for you, so don't go looking for him. As you can imagine, at such an impressionable age, Chiru didn't quite take that right. Her grandmother wasn't specific in what she said, and so Chiru thought that Narye had instead turned his back on her, and that was why they couldn't live there anymore.

They finally reached an underground cavern, a place as old as time with luminescent stones and a consistently warm temperature. There, she was taught the way of the Huan Zhi, an elite matriarchal clan of earthbenders. Yumi was brought along for Chiru's sake, and so the poor woman wouldn't be questioned by her husband.

The goal of the Huan Zhi was to eradicate patriarchal society, and put women once more in power. The girl was made to think that men were illogical, egotistical, and much too powerful for their inferior intelligence. Every girl who is brought into the Huan Zhi is supposed to be released at age eighteen to marry, bear a daughter who will earthbend, and bring her back to the clan. At age twenty-five or so, the woman, regardless of if she had borne a daughter or not, was to return to the clan to train the new girls. Most of the girls who had been brought into the Huan Zhi normally came when they were around five years old. Not having been one-hundred-percent raised in the clan, Chiru had more of an individualistic way of thinking - something that was discouraged and almost unheard of in the Huan Zhi.

For three years, Chiru was put through intensive training. She learned how to defend herself and how to attack with earthbending. She learned how to defend herself with a knife, and with a sword. She learned how to dance and entertain, a little bit about music, and a little bit about sex. The point was for her to become the ultimate woman, desirable to any man, but with a twist if she needed to defend herself.

After three years of begging to go outside and being refused, Chiru was sick of the oppression. The tunnels were complex and she was never told the way out, so she could never sneak out at night. The other girls her age - not a large group, but still her peers - thought she was insane, breaking away from the formalities of the Huan Zhi life. It was all they had ever known, and therefore Chiru was the outsider. They would often whisper about how they wished she would really leave. Because of her lack of former training, Chiru was behind in her studies as well. She tried her best, but it was always frustrating to her. The other girls did not take kindly to that, either.

One night, she grabbed the back she had taken from her house years before, packed food, and left. She wandered aimlessly in the tunnels for two days before finally reaching sunlight. She fled to Republic City, the nearby metropolis, and she met another dancer named Lijuan and got a job with him. They quickly became very close. Soon after, she started to live in a cheap apartment with the small amount of money she made. The earthbender eventually got into probending as well, and that quickly became a hobby. Having lived in Republic City for three months now, she is well-established and comfortable in her new home.
