She had to smirk at the other's words, chuckling a bit afterwards as she gave a slight shrug. "Go figure, right? The guy isn't a non-bender though. He's an Earth Bender, built a bunch of apartments himself along with his brother and his son, I think. His woman is a non-bender though, and she's not exactly fond of me. For once, I'm really not sure why." Kana snickered quietly, playing with one of the loose braids falling from her hair.
"You know, I really don't get what's up with this anti-bending thing. We're still people. And it's not like we were given the choice to be a bender when we're born. It's genetic, or it just happens. Besides, what are they going to do? Kill all the benders? Take all the bending away?" Kana's tone shifted rather drastically, and she began to sound almost,... bitter. Her brows furrowed together and a frown pulled at the corners of her lips. "I'm sure if my bending got taken away, or at least changed, my mother would be ecstatic."
Her words were more muttered than anything, more to herself than to Riko. Her eyes seemed to glare at nothing in the distance, and it was rather obvious there was something in her mumbled words, something that gave away a little more about Kana's past.
Her mother had loved Kana's grandfather, of course! In some ways she was daddy's little girl, despite not being a bender herself. She'd always respected her father, and at the same time, always felt bad for him. Being a Fire Bender, from the Fire Nation, he was always treated poorly in the North, even years and years after living there. When Kana was born, and those bright, golden eyes opened and stared back at her, her mother was terrified. She remembered all of the hate her father got for being a Fire Bender.
"Why can't you just be normal?! Stop bending fire, Kana! You live in the Water Nation!" "Mama, I can't just change who I am! I'm a fire bender! Like your father, remember?"
To be honest, it really was just as Kana's mother had feared. Kana was treated differently all her life. When she was a younger teen she began to rebel. She argued with her parents, spoke back to the elders, and picked fights with the other kids growing up. Next thing you know, she's joining a gang.
That was the first time she ever felt wanted. Ever felt important. She was the only Fire Bender, but the Black Moons accepted her. Some of them respected her, and as she got older, and became second in command, they began to look up to her. It wasn't until she was finally an adult that she realized that what she was doing in the gang, how she'd been acting for years, was wrong.
'And that's why you're here now, Kana. Idiot.' [/blockquote]

Riko listened to Kana as she explained her living accomodations, and thought it made sense for the Earthbender to wish to have another bender help him, but she couldn't help but think it was a little bit slavelike. The jealousy of his wife made sense - come on, heating his bathwater? That was a tiny bit too personal, but then again, Riko didn't really know the circumstances. You know, I really don't get what's up with this anti-bending thing. We're still people. And it's not like we were given the choice to be a bender when we're born. It's genetic, or it just happens. Besides, what are they going to do? Kill all the benders? Take all the bending away? Kana paused, and then said something under her breath that Riko didn't catch. However, the look on her face wasn't a pleasant one, so she didn't question further.
”Nah, only the avatar can do that,” she said optimistically, patting Yukiko's thick neck hair absently. ”I think we can agree that the master of all four elements would never dare side with some idiots who think that bending shouldn't exist in the first place!” She laughed a little, shaking her head. However, with the increasing population of chi-blockers, who knew what they could learn to accomplish? If they had enough willing people to experiment on, perhaps with enough research and effort they could find something that could actually take away bending temporarily, if not permanently. Riko didn't use her bending much, so the idea wasn't a huge fear for her, but it was still a part of her that would be devastating to lose.
She wasn't ever much of a bender, anyway. Perhaps if she had shown exceeding talent in any of the fighting, building, or healing classes that was mandatory as a child, her parents would have put down the money to further her education so she could have a decent job in bending. However, she was always one of the last in her class. The last to discover how to freeze water, the last to control her element in a way that was acceptable for society. She would never have been taken as a warrior, and healers would have laughed at her if she had attempted to join them. How are you supposed to work with us, they would have said, if you can't even find where the wound is to begin with? Therefore, she was always the farm girl. She loved working with the buffalo-yaks as much as she enjoyed playing with them, and it quickly became clear that waterbending, while a definite ability of hers, was not a strength.
She glanced up at a nearby clock tower, and she felt slightly antsy. It was just about time for her to visit the library, and she was still all the way in the park. Riko took a breath to calm herself.

The other sounded so sure of herself, so optimistic. Only the Avatar can do that. "Hey, just cause Avatar Aang is the first one who's ever done it, that we know of, doesn't mean he's the only one who can." She shook her head, before scoffing quietly. "Hell, maybe these uh, Chi-blockers or whatever will figure it out somehow. Who knows." As she spoke, she rose a hand, a gentle flame forming around her fingertips. "Sometimes I wonder if it actually would be safer back home."
She gave a slight shrug, though the furrowed brows showed more. Despite all the hell it'd put her through growing up, Kana's firebending meant everything to her. It made her,... well. Her. The oddball Water Tribe girl that just happened to bend fire and gain strength from the sun instead of the moon. Her Fire Bending made her, her.
Kana glanced over at the girl, and blinked once. She seemed,... uneasy. Her brow quirked in response, and she slowed in her step. "Have plans or something? I can go." There was a slight amusement to her tone, as she watched the other. [/blockquote]

Riko was starting to get nervous at the girl's long pause, her instinct to be completely on schedule overwhelming her a little. She let out a breath she hadn't even known she was holding when Kana finally spoke. Have plans or something? I can go. At first she shook her head, to be polite. Then sheshe nodded vigorously. ”Yeah, I'm sorry, I just have a tight schedule I like to stick to,” she admitted, knowing that she wouldn't seem intensely crazy about her routines this first time. Kana was a stranger, and she would try to be polite for Riko's sake. That was fine by her, and, in fat, preferable. As long as nobody interrupted her typical order of things, she was fine. ”I suppose I'll see you around,” she completed awkwardly. The waterbender was strange when it came to goodbyes. Usually, she was able to see the same person every day, so she didn't say goodbye.
Even though Kana had been a legend and a horror back in the north, she didn't seem so bad here. Perhaps the rumble of city life had mellowed her out, or perhaps she had run away because she was mellowing out. Was it possible the infamous Aria had gone soft, and that was why she had left the Black Moons? Or was there something deeper? Riko didn't want to question her new acquaintance too heavily, though. She inclined her head politely and took firm hold of Yukiko's reins. The buffalo yak took one last gentle snuffle towards Kana before allowing herself to be led away.
The park was perfect today. It was quite possible that Riko had made a new friend, and powerful ally. It was clear that her steed had taken kindly to the familiar firebender, and her pet rodent. She thought it was quite a shame that she had to leave so soon, but by the spirits, Riko had a schedule she had to live up to. Regardless of her regret about leaving though, she had a feeling that the pull she felt towards this stranger meant that it wouldn't be long until they would run into each other again.

A rather bemused grin pulled at the left corner of her mouth. Kana was never really one for... schedules and times. She was always more partial to doing things whenever she needed to. Not when she should, or when it would make the most sense. But hey, it always worked for her.
"No problem. I'll probably just go get something to eat, or go see if I can sneak into the Probending gym again. Have fun with your schedule, kid." Kana simply stopped, watching as the girl took the reins of the oversized furball and walked off with her. She gave a soft pat to the buffalo-yak's rear as she walked past. Milah reappeared out of Kana's dark mass of hair right after, squeaking repeatedly before bounding up on top of the firebender's head once again.
"Yeah, see ya'." She watched the other walk off only a short while longer, before she turned her attention to the small rodent on her head, who seemed to be finding it rather difficult to get comfortable for once. Kana reached up, pulling the small fluffy creature off to put her back on her shoulder.
"C'mon Milah. Let's get something to eat." [/blockquote]
