animal companion: Kalanni's loyal pet is a polar dog that can swim, and has no trouble being able to bend water. Her name is Nasa. Kalanni found her lying on the street one day when she was young, freezing and shivering in the cold winter. Kalanni couldn't just leave her to die of hypothermia, so she took Nasa home with her. When her parents said she couldn't keep Nasa, Kalanni didn't listen, and hid her away in her bedroom. She raised Nasa all by herself, and Nasa has always been her friend since.

Kalanni is a water-bender. She has dark brown hair, bright blue eyes, and light brown skin. Usually she wears a light blue dress with dark blue ribbons in her hair, to symbolize that she is from the Water Tribe. This usually annoys her parents, as they like to pretend that they have no set heritage. Kalanni, having trained in waterbending daily, is very lithe and agile. She is fairly thin, tall, and has a creamy-colored skin. On her wrist, she usually wears a tight bracelet, one that has been in her family for generations. She keeps it because it is the only thing she has left of her family. On her neck, she wears a pendant that matches Nasa's collar.

Kalanni is a very shy yet smart person. Having been sent to a very strict and boring school by her well-to-do parents, she learned practical skills. She isn't very good around other people, and has a hard time communicating with anyone but Nasa. Once Kalanni has loosened up to someone, she is rather kind to them. Her best friend is her pet, and through that she has become very responsible. Being a bender, she is good at fighting and self-defense. When Nasa and her get in a tough spot, she can always work together with her pet to fight her way out of trouble.

Kalanni's childhood was very boring for her. She was born in Republic City, and has lived there all of her life. Her greatest desire when she was young was to go out and explore the world. However, her overprotective parents turned away her dreams like swatting away a fly. Ever since, she felt cooped up in Republic City, trapped like a prisoner with somewhere to go and no way to get there. All throughout school, she stayed away from most of the other kids, becuase all they would do was fight. There was no sharing or anything like that going on between them.
Kalanni's parents hardly ever saw their daughter. She would only get to see them on weekends, and they usually didn't have much time to be with her then, as they were hardworking business people, and they had a reputation to keep up. They expected her to be a proper young lady, using only the best manners. And expecting Kalanni to be the be thing she as not, a "proper lady", was not a good idea. Her parents were desended from the northern water tribe, but they ignored their heritage, completely merging themselves in with the rest of Republic City. Eventually Kalanni formed a very distant bond with her parents and hardly knew anything about them as she grew up.
The one thing that helped Kalanni keep her sanity while growing up was waterbending. Nothing felt better to her then to escape from her parents' impossible desire and demands, their distant relationships, to Kalanni's true home. She never felt better in water than anywhere else. Everyday after school, Kalanni would come down to the lake in Republic City and waterbend. She would imagine herself doing the octopus form in the south pole, the place her parents would never let her go. Or maybe even the probemding arena, a place where her parents felt was too violent for their daughter to be exposed to. By practicing throughout most of her childhood, she became very good at waterbending. It was second-nature to her.
Another thing that helped Kalanni through her childhood days was Nasa, her loyal and ever-loved companion. She found her pet polar dog a comfort whenever she had gone through a long day's troubles and hardships. Walking home from school to find Nasa in her room was always a welcoming sight to Kalanni. Growing up, her parents never knew that she was secretly raising Nasa. They had forbidden her to keep the frostbitten polar dog that she had brought home one cold winter night. Naturally, she had disobeyed, and refused to part with her soon to be best friend.
Finally, when Kalanni turned fourteen, she couldn't stand anymore of her parents plans for her. She didn't want her parents to plan out her life. She wanted to live it for herself. Also, she was very curious about the world outside of Republic City. So, on a night when her parents were working particularly late, she ran away from home. She had taken nothing but a few yuans that she had stolen from her parents, and of course, Nasa. She had spent the night at the lake where she would come as a little girl. For the first time in her life, she was free. Kalanni didn't have to carry the burden of her parents or school or anything else anymore. The next day, feeling happy with her new freedom, Kalanni was ready to venture out into the world, and maybe meet some new friends along the way. She was ready to fufill her dream of traveling the world.
After she ran away, Kalanni shed her last name, so it would not serve as a reminder of the world she left behind. Also, she didn't want anyone tracking her down, so she knew she had to remove any traces she may have left of her whereabouts.
